Construction

With the advancement in technology, building complexity is consistently increasing and the expectation to reduce timelines is mounting. Combined with the various contract styles that clients utilize, general contractors have their hands full. Only with experience and practice is one able to stay versed on the ever adapting and changing construction field. I have been fortunate in my career to experience Lump sum, CM, and P3 projects with both public and private clients. These projects have ranged from $100,000 to $200 million. Below are a selection of projects that I have been apart of.

Mackenzie Plaza - Mackenzie Village Phase 2 and 3

Mackenzie Village is designed first and foremost to be a community. Owners will enjoy shared outdoor living space, including recreational facilities and landscaped parks and playgrounds.
Mackenzie Plaza incorporated a shared parkade between four 4 story buildings. The buildings structures are a combination of steel frames, beams, and load bearing studs, with a concrete parkade and concrete topping on each floor. The entire project includes 121 residential units ranging from 1 to 4 bedroom units and 37000sqft of commercial space.

Tsawwassen Sheet Pile Wall Refurbishment Project

Tsawwassen terminal had been experiencing increased flooding due to storm events and the sheet pile wall (the interface between the shore and the water), had reached the end of its service life. The lower portion of the wall was replaced with a subtidal concrete wall and riprap system. A concrete recurve wave wall was installed at the top of the wall to increase the elevation of the foreshore interface. A drainage system including a pump station was installed and built as an additional measure to prevent flooding and improve service.
The project had to be completed during the day time throughout the summer season to take advantage of low tidal periods. This resulted in the added difficulty of safely redirecting traffic through and/or around our job site.

The new hospital is nearly twice the size of the original. With 110 inpatient beds, three state of the art operating rooms and six dialysis stations, the Stanton Territorial Hospital offers extensive inpatient, critical, and support services, including biomedical and IT. An additional, unique feature to the hospital is the inclusion of an in-house church with the capacity to host smudging ceremonies.

Technical features of the building include biomass boilers, which will serve as the main heat source, with dual fuel boilers as back up and a 30% spare capacity on selected major mechanical and electrical systems.

Park Royal North Renovations

The North side of Park Royal was completely transformed and revitalized on the interior and exterior to contain a City Market, Steve Nash, Saks off 5th, and BCs largest BCL. Due to the shear size of the renovations, and the minimal amount of original drawings, the design was ongoing throughout the duration of the project. This created many challenges that were overcome and resulted in a beautifully finished mall.

Bird contributed to TransLink's sustainable transportation initiative in Metro Vancouver by constructing five new bike parkades at existing stations, including three SkyTrain stations (Bridgeport, Lafarge Lake, and Burquitlam) and two West Coast Express Stations (Port Coquitlam and Maple Meadows). Handling diverse civil works tailored to each site, Bird erected standalone buildings featuring structural steel frames, glazing facades, NLT roof decks, SBS roofing, and paving stone landings leading to secured steel doors. Interior features include double-stacked bike racks, concrete benches with NLT tops, sealed concrete floors, and security systems.
